Norfolk can take steps proven to alleviate food insecurity

“According to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization, access to an adequate supply of food is the most basic of human needs and rights. Ensuring that people have enough to eat is not only the moral duty of governments, it is in their economic and political interest.”

'It's a start;' Norfolk's St. Paul's community taking first steps to eliminate food desert

“Residents can enroll and get two boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables per month along with recipes.

"Basically what we’re doing is we’re making whole food and fresh food available here in the community," she said. "We're also giving an alternative to traditional medicine to treat chronic illness, whether it be diabetes, high blood pressure, whether it be high cholesterol. How do we treat this or how can we supplement your pharmacy prescription with fresh whole food."

The rest will support a new fresh food market that will offer health education and and provide information about how to access SNAP and Virginia Fresh Match. “

St. Paul's community in Norfolk receiving two grants to help with food insecurities in area

“The St. Paul's CDC says says that research shows that without fresh food and healthy food access, residents in these communities are losing 20 years off their life expectancy.

The market and the Food Pharmacy programs are in the implementation stages and are beginning to locate partners to team up with to carry out the vision to help these undeserved communities.”

Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art’s new exhibit explores food insecurity

“Singleton also reached out to the St. Paul’s Community Development Corporation, a non-profit whose goal is to improve the quality of life for families and individuals through stability and education. They stepped in to provide aid to residents after the Save A Lot closing.
“St. Paul’s CDC worked with other organizations and with residents to do a food distribution over two weekends that distributed about 24,000-25,000 pounds of food,” said Vice-Presidents of St. Paul’s CDC, Leahmarie Gottlieb….
….“The pandemic of racism, the pandemic of lack of food access, those pandemics have been going on for many, many, many years.”
Which is what Singleton hopes to shed light on with his painting one brush stroke at time. “

After casino vote, a strategy for employment

“…There can be no doubt that one of the primary reasons the residents supported the casino measure was the Pamunkey Tribe’s promise of 2,500 jobs. The promise of jobs — meaningful, sustainable, rewarding jobs — will advance the city’s promised transformation of the St. Paul’s Quadrant where initial efforts have already been launched to revitalize the neighborhoods of Tidewater Gardens, Young Terrace and Calvert Square.
